Community First Responders
Community First Responders (CFRs) are London Ambulance Service volunteers who respond to 999 calls in their own car alongside ambulances.
They are trained to use defibrillators and respond alongside us to life-threatening emergency calls in their community. They are given equipment and support and respond in their own time.

Applying To Join The Community First Responder Scheme
The London Ambulance Service will recruit Volunteer Community First Responders in late 2024/2025. All details on how to apply will be released on this webpage.
-
What is the commitement?
After completing the recruitment process, applicants will engage in online pre-learning and attend an initial five-day, full-time training course. CFRs commit to at least 10 monthly hours and participate in ongoing Continuous Personal Development (CPD).
-
What forms the recruitment process?
If you pass both parts of the recruitment process, you will undertake an enhanced DBS check, Occupational Health screening and reference checks, all of which must be passed. Once this is done, you will be offered a training course. The course generally runs from Monday to Saturday, in the London region.
-
What if I have never used an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)?
This is an essential skill that you will need to be competent in to pass the course. We do not expect you to be an expert. However, we do expect that you safely use a defibrillator and deliver high-quality cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).
-
Do I always respond from the same place?
Community First Responders primarily attend 999 calls within their local community using their own vehicle.
-
Is there any training after I qualify?
Yes, there are regular CPD evenings throughout the year, and you need to attend a minimum number of mandatory sessions and maintain your minimum commitment of 10 hours per month.
-
Are expenses covered?
Travel and mileage expenses will be covered. Training, uniform and equipment required for duty are also provided.
