Our history

From our beginnings in the late 19th century we have grown to become one of the busiest urgent and emergency care responders in the world.

Celebrating 60 years of #TeamLAS

April 2025 marks 60 years since a London-wide service was created in 1965 when one ambulance service was formed in London from parts of nine existing services.

Over the years the Service has transformed. The days of transporting patients with just a stretcher, a splint and some basic breathing apparatus are long gone. We now have an ambulance fleet fit for the 21st century including fully electric ambulances, sophisticated technology, life-saving medications and interventions, as well as up to date digital equipment to aid response to patients.
