Cyclists smash fundraising target to raise funds for ambulance colleagues

A group of determined cyclists, including paramedics and their families, raised nearly £7,000 for the London Ambulance Charity at the iconic 55 mile London to Brighton Cycle Ride recently.

The money raised will support staff at London Ambulance Service by funding wellbeing initiatives for frontline crews, including wellbeing support vehicles, outdoor gardens and rest areas at ambulance stations.

Once out of London the team cycled along country lanes passing through Chipstead, Banstead and Haywards Heath before reaching the challenging Ditchling Beacon – a mile long climb to the top of the South Downs.

Emergency Medical Technician Stewart Hill, based at Ilford Ambulance Station, was one of the cyclists to raise funds for the Service. He starts his paramedic degree in November.

Stewart said: “I’m not a diehard cyclist but I do love a challenge so I thought I’d give it a go.

“Our colleagues often care for patients in very challenging circumstances and it’s vital that we provide mental health support to our crews out on the road in and in the control room.”

Head of Charity Jess Burgess said: “Our wonderful team raised an incredible amount of money which will improve the wellbeing of staff and volunteers who work tirelessly every day to care for Londoners when they need us most.

“As the colder months arrive our frontline crews can expect to face significant pressure trying to help more patients over winter, working day and night to care for 9 million Londoners.

“Donations to the Charity pay for things like our wellbeing support vehicles, which provide refreshments to our crews at hospitals, and ensure our paramedics and frontline crews receive the mental health support they need during difficult shifts.

“Your support makes a real difference for our heroes in green.”
