Public education, schools and community visits

Our team visit hundreds of schools, community groups and organisations every year, talking to thousands of people about how the ambulance service works and what to do in an emergency.

About the Public Education team

The role of the Public Education team is to provide health education, including illness and injury prevention advice, first aid and information on accessing healthcare, to communities across London. Our education sessions help to improve people’s understanding of how and when to access our 999 and 111 services, as well as providing people with life-saving skills.

We believe it is important to teach communities about the ambulance service and what to do in an emergency, so they are prepared if they need to call us one day.

The groups we speak to include:

  • Schools, colleges and sixth forms
  • Youth groups including Girlguiding, The Scouts and Boys & Girls Brigades
  • Cadet groups
  • Junior Citizenship Schemes
  • Sensory loss groups
  • Community groups for older people
  • Youth Justice services
  • Groups supporting people with a learning disability or autism

Some of the topics we cover include:

  • Basic first aid and CPR
  • Knife crime and haemorrhage control
  • Drugs and alcohol awareness
  • How and when to call 999 and 111
  • Mental health and wellbeing

The Public Education team also works closely with other emergency services, healthcare and public sector partners and charities to deliver collaborative education programmes throughout the year. These include the Junior Citizenship Scheme, Your Life You Choose, the Safety First Project, and Your Stance.

What teachers are saying

‘I just wanted to say a massive thank you for today. The Knife Crime Presentation was so emotive, hard-hitting and thought provoking. I have never seen our Year 9 students so focused and engaged. So many of them since have spoken to me about the experience and just how much they took away from it’.
