Who we are and what we do
-
Who we are
We are the busiest emergency ambulance service in the UK and provide healthcare that is free to patients at the time they receive it. We work closely with hospitals and other healthcare professionals as well as with the other emergency services. We are also central to the emergency response to major incidents and terrorist threats in the capital.
-
How we fit into the NHS structure
We are the only NHS trust that covers the whole of London.
The 999 service we provide to Londoners is purchased by clinical commissioning groups. Our performance is monitored by NHS England. Ultimately we are responsible to the Department of Health.
Details of how we fit into the wider NHS, and how the healthcare system in the capital is managed, can be found on the NHS England website.
-
Senior staff and management board members
We are led by a trust board, which is made up of eight non-executive directors, nine executive directors (including our chief executive) and an associate non-executive director.
-
Organisational structure
We have over 8,000 staff and volunteers based at ambulance stations and support offices across London.
Our accident and emergency service is split into five operational sectors: north west, north central, north east, south east and south west.
Each is managed by an assistant director of operations, and each ambulance station complex has its own group station manager.
